Background Information

The Friends of the Turnbull Library NgāHoa o te Whare Pukapuka Turnbull have been supporting the work of the Alexander Turnbull Library since May 1939, so this year is our 80thanniversary. We want this year’s creative writing competition to be part of the national commemoration “TUIA ENCOUNTERS 250” that acknowledges 250 years of sustained onshore meetings between Māori and Europeans in Aotearoa New Zealand.

We decided to sponsor this 2019 Competition with $3,000 in prize money, to encourage creative responses to items in the collections of the Alexander Turnbull Library, exploring possible themes such as cross-cultural encounters, dual heritage and shared futures, whakapapa and identity.
