Background Information

The Friends of the Turnbull Library NgāHoa o te Whare Pukapuka Turnbull have been supporting the work of the Alexander Turnbull Library since May 1939. We decided to sponsor this SMART ALEX Competition for three years, to encourage young people to explore the Library vast collection of images and to create imaginative responses to items in the collections of the Alexander Turnbull Library.  This year’s creative writing competition – the third and final year – was a celebration of the centenary of the Alexander Turnbull Library. This wonderful national treasure – the beating heart of the National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa – first opened its doors to the public in June 1920.
